Puppy Training Advice

Sometimes it may feel as though you brought home Cujo instead of Lassie! The good news is that, with just a bit of basic training, your dog can become better behaved within just a short amount of time.

You may have to consult a professional when training your dog. A professional will be able to tell you what you are not doing right. A professional trainer will be able to help you understand where you are going wrong with the training, and set you on the right path.

Vary the treats you use as rewards for your dog during training sessions. Your dog will soon come to realize that training treats will not be run-of-the-mill fare, but special treats he will want to work hard to earn.

Your dog should always be able to identify which behaviors are acceptable and which are not. Everyone in the household must consistently enforce the boundaries you have established. It confuses the dog and sabotages your efforts.

You should always check credentials before hiring anyone to help you understand your animal's behavior better. Different animal behavior specialists use different practices. They also have varying opinions on what is best for your dog. You want to be certain that the trainer you go to employs practices that you are comfortable with.

Keep training sessions with your puppy short. Puppies have short attention spans and they cannot focus too much, so have shorter sessions and try to be positive during them every time. A training session that wears your puppy out is going to turn into an unpleasant memory, making him less likely to respond well to subsequent sessions, and more inclined to ignore what you are trying to teach him.

Try to challenge your pet on a regular basis. While you may know your dog hasn't forgotten anything, try little tests to ensure he remembers all the commands he's learned up to that point.

The sooner you start training your dog, the better. Young dogs have more resilient brains and are easier to train. If you train your dog when he is a puppy, then he will continue to be a good dog for the remainder of his life.

You should use positive motivation when you are training your dog. Be quick to reward your dog when it follows commands. Using punishment and negative training techniques will only make the dog afraid of you and less likely to want to please its master.

Crate training your new puppy is most effective when you take small steps. As soon as they start to feel comfortable in the crate when the door is open, try closing the gate and have them eat inside. In the beginning it is important to only leave the dog in the crate for a few seconds. After a while you will be able to leave them in the crate for longer amounts of time. Freaking out your dog is a sign that you need to slow down.

If a dog experiences separation anxiety, it should get experience being around others. The dog needs to learn that there are other people in the world besides you.

The first step in your puppy training would be to teach him his name. This will create a nice bond between the two of you. Repeat the name as much as possible, and reward your puppy when he responds. This is the first set of commands you should teach your new puppy. Spend a lot of time getting to know your pup, and building a loving relationship with him so he knows who to trust. This way he or she will be more open to some advanced training.

If you see your puppy chewing on something he should not be, you need to stop him immediately. When your puppy knows what he is allowed to chew on, he is less likely to chew on your belongings when left to his own devices.

If dogs have similar personalities, you may be able to train them simultaneously. If your dogs are having difficulty focusing on their training when together, train them each separately. After they have received a bit of training they can be taught together.

Many dog owners are surprised to find that dog training is a much easier and faster process than they had expected. If you feel like you and your dog are having a hard time, try some of this advice.
