The Do's and Don'ts of Proper Puppy Training

Puppies provide us with unconditional love and lots of joy. No wonder they are the most popular pets in the US. It can be tough work when you bring home a puppy. There is a lot of training that needs to take place. If you stay consistent with these tips, your puppy will quickly be trained.

Each puppy will respond to different training methods. A loving puppy will more than likely respond well to positive reinforcement. On the other hand, an aggressive puppy may respond well to negative reinforcement that shows him your alpha position. Never be afraid to try a new training style if your current one is not effective.

Crate training requires crates of the correct size. Your little puppy will get bigger, remember! Find a crate big enough for your adult puppy. The ideal size would be one that doesn't make your puppy crowded when turning around or laying down.

Give your puppy lots of love. When your puppy does something right, it's crucial that you provide them with positive attention. When your puppy has followed a command, be sure to give praise and attention. Your puppy will be happy and they will be easy to train.

If you're looking to teach your puppy, see to it that you read from different types of resources. This will give you the right information you need in teaching your puppy. Talk to those who have the same kind of puppy you do, and get suggestions. Use all available information to create a customized plan of action for training your puppy.

Always discourage any bad behavior you see. Say "No' to your puppy in a strong voice. Yelling at or hitting your puppy is never acceptable. Always correct bad behavior as soon as it occurs. Puppies have short attention spans. Delays will do little more than confuse the puppy.

Use the 'shake-can' method of training. Use an empty can, such as a soda can to hold a few coins. Seal the can shut. When your puppy does things you do not want it to, shake the can. This will give your puppy a start and stop the bad behavior. After a few repetitions, the puppy realizes he can't perform that behavior. Be sure to shake the can only once, doing it multiple times could desensitize your puppy.

If your pet is prone to jumping onto your lap, you should gently squeeze his paws after he does so. This communicates that the behavior is unacceptable and should be avoided. It is uncomfortable but a non-painful experience for the puppy. Before long, they will stop their habit of jumping on people due to this association.

When teaching a puppy to sit, get to stand, and then hold up a treat above them. Put the biscuit in the air over them and move the biscuit backwards. He will end up looking up when following your hand. When his head goes up, his bottom will go down.

Does your puppy like to pull on his leash during a walk? This problem is a very common one for puppy owners. Thankfully, resolving it is very simple. Visit a local pet supply shop and get a cheap harness as a way to prevent pulling and to make your walks fun.

If you are crate training your puppy, you need to show them that this is where they will sleep. During meal time, place their food in the crate while allowing the door to remain open as they eat. This will cause them to associate good things, such as eating, with their crate.

Consistency is very important when you are crate training your puppy. The first thing to keep in mind is that you must let him use the bathroom as soon as he's let out. As you continue this training, your pet will begin to wait until he gets to the appropriate location to relieve himself.

Timing is crucial when you train a puppy, so you need to spend an adequate amount of time training them, but not too much. Begin with shorter training sessions and gradually increase the time each day. This will give you a good idea of when to put more effort into your training session.

Varying your vocal tones to suit different purposes can be helpful in puppy training. Giving a command or correcting a negative behavior requires an authoritative tone, while praise can be softer. Speak sharply and firmly, and be louder when correcting.

You should develop a feeding routine with your puppy. Your puppy will begin to recognize there is a routine if you regularly remove the food bowl 10 or 15 minutes after you put it down. Your puppy will soon become accustomed to his feeding schedule and eat quickly.

Puppy power! You're ready to start training today. Practice patience and reward your puppy with tons of positive reinforcement. You may not see overnight changes, but with time and patience, your puppy will be better behaved.
