Training Your Puppy
Your puppy is an important part of your life and it is
important that you figure out the proper way to train it. This article will
help you train your puppy properly while having fun with your pet. You need to
start by educating yourself on puppy training before you can start properly
educating your puppy.
Stick with positive reinforcement when it comes to puppy
training. Use petting, positive words, and occasion treats to reward your puppy
whenever he does something good. Never hit or shout at your puppy. This teaches
your puppy nothing and will just show him that you do not know how to train
him. Be firm, consistent and positive for the best results in puppy training.
Make sure you are not giving your puppy the wrong signals
when he behaves badly. If you're amused and it shows when they are acting
improperly, they'll do it again. That is counterproductive. Consistency is the
key to accomplishing your goals when training your puppy.
Primary reinforcement is critical to puppy training. This
utilizes something the puppy loves as a means to reward positive behaviors.
This includes treats and rubbing their belly. Your puppy will learn well from
this.
One of the most important things in training is teaching your
puppy to come back to you. Your pet must learn to come back to you whenever you
call it. Work on this skill daily. The ability to come when called is essential
for your puppy's safety. The time invested in teaching this skill is time well
spent.
Training sessions must happen regularly. You need to learn
as much as your puppy does in order to be an effective trainer. Without
constant practice, nothing is worthwhile in life. Puppy training is no
different than learning any other habit.
Keep training session’s short for best results. Sessions
should be no more than 15 minutes to avoid frustrating the puppy, which is
counterproductive. Don't forget to play with your pup as well.
You can train a pooch to roll over fairly quickly if you
have some treats to hand out. First, have the puppy lay down. Then, use the
treat to draw his head from one side to the other. They'll follow your treat
with their nose which will cause them to roll over. Say "roll over"
as you perform the maneuver. This may take time, so don't become frustrated.
Every day, try to allow your pet to have an hour or so of
exercise. This is on top of regular training lessons and restroom breaks.
Making sure that your puppy gets enough exercise makes your training sessions a
lot more effective and it will also encourage your puppy to have good behavior.
Puppies that exercise are happier and more responsive.
Be sure to take your puppy to the vet annually for
vaccinations and a physical exam. If you see your puppy struggling or
regressing with his training, ascertain that he is healthy. Puppies are good at
hiding their pain. So many times behavioral changes are the only clue that
there is a health issue. For instance, aggression may signal pain, while
regression concerning house training may be suggestive of urinary tract
infections.
Your puppy will behave well if you keep reinforcing your
training. Your puppy isn't completely trained once he stops being a puppy. If
you reinforce good behavior, your puppy will be obedient, and he will stop
being negative as long as he is being disciplined.
Be careful of disrupting your training time with rewards. If
your puppy follows a training command properly, then it is acceptable to reward
the behavior to a calm animal. You may feel great about it, but you don't want
to make the pup feel over-excited. Stay calm, have them be calm, and reward
them for appropriate behavior.
If a behavior has lasted for many years, keep your
expectations grounded. It could take you some time to get a puppy to stop
jumping on people or sleeping on the couch if the puppy has been doing this for
years. It is much easier to address issues when puppies are still young.
Remember not to reward your puppy for bad behavior when they
do something negative. You will show your puppy that they can get over on you.
For instance, giving a puppy a treat each time it barks.
Be sure to always grab your puppy's attention the same way.
Begin commands by using his name. This gets his attention, and then you can
follow through with the command. Puppies quickly recognize their name which
allows you to get their attention.
You are now taking the first step to become a successful
puppy trainer. When you follow the tips presented here, you will be able to
understand your puppy's needs and train appropriately. Small tips can make a
huge difference.
